Forthcoming International ConferenceOn the Study and Research of the European
Literatures
College of Foreign Languages and Literatures Peking University, Beijing, China, 100871
Upon the occasion of the publication of The History of European Literature, a three-volume work of about 1.8 million words, we decide to hold an international conference to exchange our experience with scholars of relevant fields and to further promote the teaching and research of European literatures in China. The History of European Literature is the result of 6 years’ arduous work of 90 scholars from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Europe who participated in this project sponsored by Peking University. The editorial board is composed of seven professors of Peking University. Professor Li Funing, a highly honored professor of English Literature, is the chief editor of the book. Other members on the board are Liu Yi-qing and Luo Jingguo, both professors of English Literature and responsible for the editing work of the first volume. Peng Kexun, professor of Russian Literature, is responsible for the second volume, and Luo Peng, Sun Fengcheng and Shen Shiyan, professors of French, German and Spanish Literatures, are in charge of the third. The three volumes are designed to give emphasis to the modern time, with the ancient Greek and Roman literature, the Middle Ages, the Age of Renaissance, the 17th Century and the 18th Century in the first, and the 19th century and the 20th century put separately in the second and the third. This History is to replace the 2-volume European Literary History, an authoritative textbook published by Peking University in 1964, which shows much prejudice of the then narrow ideology pursued by Mainland China. We hope that this new History, with its broadened views and scope, will be used as a textbook or as reference in colleges and universities of Mainland China from the beginning of the 21 century, and that it will also enable those who are interested in literature to carry on studies on their own. In order to call attention to, and to promote as well, the study of European Literatures in China, we decide to use the occasion to sponsor this international conference to exchange ideas and experiences with experts and scholars all over the world who are engaged in the teaching and research in this field. The Conference is scheduled to be held on October 9-12, 2001 in Peking University, Beijing, China. Topics suggested by the conference are centered around the teaching and compiling of literary histories and also on individual European writers and works. (For details about the topics, please see the enclosed Call for Papers.) Generally speaking, participants are expected to contribute a paper. But if some scholars only want to participate in the discussion, please contact us, for a few exceptions are also possible. The following are some technical details: 1. The Conference will hold big forum speeches; panels or seminars and a tentative program will be sent to you as soon as we receive all the participants’ proposed topics. 2. The deadline for submitting abstract or paper draft is March 15, 2001. 3. Participants are expected to cover their own transportation expense from and to their own countries and a registration fee of $ 200 which will cover all the meals and two sightseeing activities of the participants. Rooms are about $30 - $45 a night. 4. We shall help arrange for those who want to do some shopping or sight-seeing in Beijing, and those who want to stay a little longer after the Conference for sight-seeing must let us know beforehand so that we can arrange for them. 5. Invitation letters will be sent around mid-January. And those who need to apply for funds and want the invitation letter early for that purpose please contact us as soon as possible.
