Some Preliminary Synthetic Studies Related to Natural Perylenequinones

Abstract:: 3-Allyl-6, 8-dimethoxy-1-tetralone as the intermediate projected for a synthesis of hypocrellin was studied for its facile formation from 3-(3, 5-dimethoxy-benzyl)-5-hexenoic acid and its Wacker oxidation, addition of bromine and of hydrogen chloride. It and the diketone obtained by its Wacker oxidation were shown not susceptible towards oxidation by selenium dioxide.
